I know what you are thinking, “New Years is January 1st!! How Does it make any sense?” Well, here me out and you too may agree.
I live in New England. January first is notably freezing and snowy. Christmas is over and there isn’t much in the way of excitement for the next couple of months. I do not enjoy cold weather activities such as sledding, or skiing. I prefer running, hiking, and swimming. This lack of enthusiasm for winter sports compounded by the loss of my father and my life partner during the first two months of the year has made it a lax time in motivation. I’m sure that many of you can relate to the winter blues as well.
What about March? I’m sure you are wondering. Well, March is a month of who knows what the weather will be here in New England. It can be the start of spring or it can bring blizzards. One never can tell what is to come in the month of march.
April on the other hand, in nature, is a month of rebirth. Here in New England, the snow is gone or at least all but those giant snow mounds created by the plows. You can hear the birds singing songs signaling nature to awaken from its slumber. April is a month of renewal and transition for mother nature. It’s only fitting that it be our month of renewal as well. The calender new year may be January first but your new year resolution doesn’t have to be.
If you look at the most common new year resolutions, weight loss, getting in shape, and eat healthy; How does January make sense? nobody whats to wake up at 4am to go to the gym when it’s five degrees outside! You want to diet? Fruits and vegetables are old and have been sitting in warehouses all winter. They lack so much nutrients and taste. No wonder so many people fail at their new year resolutions! I can’t think of anything less motivating than freezing temperatures and tasteless food. So let’s forget all that January first resolutions stuff!
April signals earths awakening from a winter slumber. Jack frost retreats, the sun shines warmer, the birds sing beautiful melodies, the trees bud, and the days get longer. These are the days to get up at 4am to go to the gym or even go for a run outside. Fresh fruits and vegetables will soon be in season to enjoy as you embark on your journey of healthy eating. The days just feel more pleasant and there is a pep in our step. When we feel good, we are more apt to take steps to feel even better.
If I have not persuaded you to start your new year resolution in April that’s ok. If you have already failed at the new year resolution you started in January, this is the time to start fresh.
